What retrograde actually is
Three or four times a year, Mercury appears to move backwards against the stars for about three weeks. It is an optical effect of orbital speeds — the planet never reverses. Astrologically, retrograde periods are read as a shift from output to review: re-checking, re-negotiating, re-connecting.
What it is not
Mercury retrograde does not break laptops or doom relationships. Treating it as a universal excuse misses the point and gives astrology a bad name. In a personal chart, its effect depends on which of your houses Mercury is transiting and what natal planets it touches — that varies per person, which is why generic panic is useless.
A practical checklist
During the three weeks: build slack into travel plans; re-read contracts before signing; back up files (good advice year-round); expect people from the past to resurface; use the RE- verbs — review, revise, reconnect, rest. Launches are not forbidden; they simply benefit from double-checking.
